Maps!

I love maps. Ergo I love this wonderful blog I came across and proceeded to peruse for a good portion of this evening called Strange Maps. Contents include maps made out of food, maps drawn by 11 year olds, maps made out of statistics and "what if" maps, among many many others. Check it out.

R-House. In the middle of our street.

The R-House is designed by Michael Jantzen as a vacation home. It's made from a new super durable sustainably-sourced wood called Accoya. Walls rotate for optimal sun/wind angles. It also comes complete with wind turbines and solar panels. It's supposed to be completely sustainable, although only in temperate climates. Lots more info and photos here.

Translucent Concrete

I don't know how it's made, but it's fascinating. I wish I could find more information about it, but it's still pretty new. Most of what I could find was in Spanish. Here's what I do know: the creators - Joel Sosa and Sergio Omar Galvan - are students from a university in Mexico; it's 30% lighter than concrete; it allows through up to 80% of light and it has the same strength as traditional concrete.However, something similar has apparently been on the market now for a few years, manufactured by a company called Litracon. It was invented in 2001 by a Hungarian guy named Aron Losonczi. It's made by combining optical fibers with fine concrete and also has the same strength as traditional concrete.From the looks of it, they're manufactured differently. I'm not sure about the weight of Litracon. Either way, they're both pretty cool. And I'm sure there's more to come in this field.
